To my north lay the sweep of Porpoise Bay, where Hector's dolphins were catching waves with local surfers. Fanning out to the south was the rock platform of Curio Bay. As an ex-geography teacher and citizen geologist, to be in the presence of a petrified forest was like finding the holy grail.
